is there any home remedy for this? this eve monsta keeps going to the litter tray then leaving it. he also is manically begging for food even though there is dry food in his bowl. he is going on 14 and i have also wondered if hes getting dementia. otherwise he seems ok, hes quite settled now. thing is, i cant really try to keep an eye on him when he wees to see if hes straining cos he is painfully shy and darts straight out of the tray if any one gets near. i know you can give humans bicarb of soda for cystisis .... would it work if i put some in his water bowl? help him out till morning?

I d on't know mandimoo but cats can get stones in their bladders much the same as humans and it can cause a lot of pain and have serious consequences. You really need to get him to a vet tomorrow so it can be sorted quickly. Hope he's soon better

I really wouldn't advise any home remedies - for a start if you introduce anything into a cat's drinking water you may discourage it from drinking - if he has a urinary infection he needs to drink - take him to the vet - it could be a host of things, possibily not simple cystitis and a lot of them may be serious. At his age especially, you need a professional diagnosis. Hope things go well and keep us posted.

Stress can cause cystitis in cats. Has anything happened that could have stressed him. My 21yr old Tansy had cystitis a few months ago, after she had a bleed in her one and only eye, and the vet said the cystitis was down to the stress. It is a very painful condition in cats. Can you pop a piece of white kitchen roll in his tray, and then have a look if there are any pinkish/red spots (diluted blood) from the urine. If so he needs urgent treatment with antibiotics. But in any case he needs to be seen by the vet asap, like tomorrow. Tansy was ok after a 5 day course of antibiotic tablets. Does your cat eat moist cat food as well as biscuits. The reason I ask is that with the dry food the cat needs to drink a lot of water, and if he's not drinking enough it will absorb too much fluid from his body, and at 14 his digestion won't be quite as good as when he was young. Hope all goes he's soon better. please let us know.

our cat gets it a lot, and our vet suggested two things
1) one of those cat drinking fontain things - apparently they are more attracted to drinking moving water
2) giving 1/2 wet 1/2 dry food. On the wet stuff, make it really really runny with loads of extra water - he is then getting water without hassle. we do 2 all the time now to prevent cystitis

mandimoo, please get him to the vet's. I lost my little Monty (aged two and a half) last summer, from complications due to cystitis. It affects male cats worse than females. K xx

thank you everyone, ive put kitchen paper over his litter in the hope that if he goes overnight it will be very obvious, but hopefully with no blood. will take him tomorrow if no sign of urine by the morning.

My cats both suffered from this, they were taken to the vets and both had to be on a special diet for life to help aviod reoccurrance.
Unfortunately turk got it again, and died within hours! You must must take him to the vets NOW!!
he will be in pain, even without blood, which our other cat didnt have they can still have crystals in their urine, which will then forn large ones and block their urethra, causing pain and death! Its so importants to get him treated now, i have been in the terrible situation where my cat died b4 we got a chance to get him to the vets, it happens so fast sometimes! hope everything is ok with ur lad xx

took monsta to vet this morning after i caught him trying to wee on a hand towel that had fell on the floor, poor old man. vet said his bladder feels normal and relaxed so no blockage (phew). he's had a long acting antibiotic and a dose of metacam. now i am keeping an eye to make sure he starts weeing again. i know i shoulda asked the vet, but i didnt.... any idea how long it should be before he will go if the meds have worked? if he hasnt weed by tomorrow ive got to take him back and its been an hour now, still no wee ;o(

hopefully he will be fine but i did have 1 of my cats who had cystitis and was given the long lasting antibiotic which worked to start with but it came back after a fortnight and he had to have the other sort to clear it out of him so dont panic if that happens like i did as i thought it had got to be something a lot more serious when it came back

my boys had the antibiotic for 10 days, turk who had it more severe needed steroids, it did reoccurre after the meds stopped which is why we had to change their diets onto the dry food from the vets.
