How do I set my wireless to secure?

What router ?

It's a Belkin G.

from belkin support....

1. Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the Belkin wireless router.

2. Open your web browser and type the router IP address of the router (by default, the address is http://192.168.2.1.) in the address bar and press Enter.

3. Click Login on the top of the page to login to the router. By default the Password is left blank, click Submit.

4. Click Security under Wireless menu.


5. Under Security Mode, select WPA/WPA2-personal (PSK)

6. Select WPA2-PSK as your Authentication

7. Select AES as the Encryption Technique.

8. Enter a word or group of characters in the Password (PSK) box. The Pre-Shared Key must be 8 to 63 characters in length.
Note: The PSK (Pre-Shared Key) is case sensitive ("A" is different than "a")

9. Click Apply changes to save the settings.


Then just disconnect the cable and try to connect by wireless and enter the key you used above and it should connect

Thanks chuck. I seem to have messed it up.

I got to the last stage and it wouldn't go any further. Now the wireless isn't working. What have I done wrong? and do you know how to fix it?

log back into the router, (steps 1,2 and 3) click on the wireless menu and have a look for a setting called something like network name or SSID and change that to something else and save settings.

Now search for wireless netowrks again and you should see one called whatever you just changed the name to, connect to that using the network key you entered earlier.

While you're at it, in the router settings pages, you can also change the admin username and password (as Chuck said above, by default it's blank).

If possible, use random letters (uppercase and lowercase) and numbers both both passwords --- admin and wpa.

Store them somewhere (even just write them down on a piece of paper to be kept secret).

This is far more secure than using a simple, memorable password like "password123".
