Can the old bios be saved and restored? can I download a bios from internet and 'flash it' into my existing one? is it dangerous to my system?

Flashing the bios is upgrading/updating the rom to the latest version. I would proceed with extreme caution. If you flash your motherboard's bios with the wrong file then you run the risk of rendering it unusable. As far as I am aware, Compaq protect the old bios in case anything goes wrong, and very new boards have dual bios chips. I would advise against this unless really necessary.
