My son has fully comp ins on his car, an astra 1.6, he's 21 years old, he needs the use of my car, a volvo 2.0 convertable, is he too young to drive it on his insurance?
The best way to find out is to ask his insurance company as some fully comp policies do not include this facility especially for young drivers. Also you may find that it would be easier for you to include him as a named driver on your own policy.
You may also want to check with your insurer. If you don't haev 'any driver' cover and your son isn't a named driver then I think your insurance won't cover damage to your car.
my daughter needed to borrow my car for a couple of weeks when hers was off the road. I named her on my insurance for a month - think it cost about 15.00
If your son's Insurers allow him the Driving Other Cars extension to his policy it will only provide Third party Only coverage which means no cover for any damage to your vehicle.
If he needs the use of your car then it would make sense to add him as a named driver so that you retain coverage for damage to your car.
Fully comp, does not mean some sort of default cover for driving other cars, this is a common myth. If it has the clause then great but there is default.
Thanks for all of your responses. Looks like the best thing is to have him as a named driver. I know fully comp would cover him for 3rd party if his age wasn't an issue.
