agree with previous post but what will help save your furniture is my stock in trade reply to this problem - put double sided sticky tape over the areas your cat uses to encourage him/her to use new scratching post. Cats hate the feel of this - scratching poles are very easy to make - attach a piece of carpet to a thickish pole and firmly set the pole on a base. maybe even fix something on a string for kitty to play with as well.

we have a scratching post which our cat uses but she tends to like other areas as well.I hate the idea of nailclipping as she like to climb the tree outside [small tree!]and play in the branches.Looks like I will need a lot of ''sticky tape''!!!!!
Thanks for your help
You could try cat mint spray on the scratching post, they adore it and that might encourge your cat to use it more.g.
also if you clip there nails they will only scratch more to manicure them sharp again!
Scratch post and as before mentioned sticky tape or if its a fabric of sofa get some spray that is of a citris base. Cats hate it and will avoid it. I purchased some from ebay from a power seller for just a few pounds.
Good luck !
