Any established cat will make sure the newcomer knows who is top cat, so there will be a degree of spitting and chasing until they settle down who is who between them, and then all will be peace - apart from the occasional spat when one feels like being a bit bossy.
If your current cat is not that old, he will probably accept a cat of either gender, but you will need to get him 'done' if you buy a queen, in fact, if you have a tom, get both of them neutored, cuts down on the machismo factor which always causes fights.

Good on you for thinking about this before jumping straight in and later on finding it wasn't such a good idea.
Cats differ in temperament just like humans. Even two sociable cats can produce 'catty' ones, so it is down to a bit of luck.
We used to have two cats many years ago - both female fixed- were the best of friends and they even used to groom each other.
My sister in law has two - both toms fixed - and even after 6 years, if the black one sees the other one it goes over to the food and eats everything, even if it makes him sick, and then chases the other one.
I do believe that the eating all the food exercise is a 'look I am the boss' display, so denutting them does not always subside the hormones, although it must help.
If you are happy that you can provide suitable toilet facilities for two and make provisions for any contingency like vet bills, by all means have a go.

As previous posts all cats are differant.
I had a male cat who was approx 3 / 4 years old. I introduced a female cat who was approx 6 months old and for the first week or so he was very hostile but after a few weeks he really fathered her. He taught her all his old tricks and the neighbourhood haunts. He sadly went missing about a year later an never returned but he adored her. He used to clean her ears and they used to cuddle up real snug. So you can never really tell.
A year or so later I rehomed a older tom cat and brought it intot he house hoping for them to have the same relationship but they dont. They barely look at each other! They have the odd scrap but cant really bear each other!!
Kitties are crazy for sure!
