its all down to peter kay.hes been a fan of the song for ages and used it in phoenix nights and in his live gigs and then mimed for it for children in need.
I'm a mobile DJ and to be honest I think most people are fed up to the back teeth with R&B, and hip hop dominating the charts. It must tell the record companies something when a 30+ year old good time singalong record is popular enough to be at Number one for 7 weeks.
as far as I'm concerned, it's always been cool. One of those cheesy, sing-along songs that everyone knows. I was delighted when it was part of Phoenix Nights and so was heard by a new audience.
Like Mortatube I am a mobile DJ too, and I'm inclined to agree with him. I would like to add that I played the tune last autumn before it was popularised by Comic Relief and I was met by looks of dismay (I like to take risks in what I do). It clearly appeals more to your general football fans type crowd rather than your posh upper class, they don't seem to get it.
