I don't think that it denotes a squadron as such, but is a cap badge the surroundings differing to denote rank.

P.S Stewey.....I have never been in the R.A.F, but my usename sqad617 denotes my life long interest in Bomber Command of WW2.

Mr O's dad was something to do with bombers in WW2. His mum worked at the same base & that's where they met.
I've just had a glance at his latest library book and surprise, surprise, it's called Dresden.

Nah....just kidding, sqad; I don't have one. If such a thing existed it would be worth quite a few guineas wot? I recall reading the book about 617 Squadron (The Dam Busters) a few years ago, and the name Wallace and Gibson stuck in my mind.
