I've read the postings referred to by chrisrob but still don't understand HOW the stuff works although it seems from some of the comments that it is absolute magic!!(yes I'm aware of the saying that if it works nothing else matters).
If it's lawn aeration you want, applications of sharp sand would do the trick looted in so that the grass shows through.
For growing beds, sharp sand is also good but you may want to add something a little organic.
