John Carlin

Am trying to find the marriage details of John Carlin born 1907 in Shirland. I know he was a policeman and married Nellie but can find no details of her maiden name or the marriage. Have been right through the marriages on ancestry but to no avail.
Any help appreciated.

A bit young perhaps, but not a bad fit and possibly worth looking into. If you want to take a chance, you can order the certificate - 8.50. Refs - West Derby, Vol 8b Page 611.
If you've a subscription to Ancestry, your best bet would be to look at the GRO marriage indexes. Its a bit painstaking, but you may find others. Unfortunately, FreeBMD's coverage only goes up to 1934 and isn't complete anyway.

police officers records are quite interesting and give alot of personal information including a detailed physical descroption, If he was a policeman in the same county as his place of birth you could write to the Derbyshire Constabulary archives:

I have my great great grandfather's police record from Lincolshire Constabulary and it is really interesting.
Even if he was only in that Constabulary for a short time, the record will say where he transferred to.
I also agree that Nellie would have been under another Christian name in the marriage index.
You are probably better looking for the birth registration of their children to find her maiden name.
Do you have any idea of their place of burial? That may well give you a lead to her date and place of death, the ceretificate should give her maiden name.

The West Derby hundred was originally west lancashire but as a registration district it was adjacent to Liverpool, Shirland is in Derbyshire, I would imagine he moved around as a police officer during his career, as a police constable i would think it would be from his home county he was recruited and that could have been Derbyshire and if he was already in the force it would be a reason for his transfer to West Derby, but it is also possible the west derby marriage is not him, nellie may not have been Elizabeth, her name may have been something else. helen or ellen or Nora or even nell or nellie. 1926 is also too young for him to marry as a police constable as he would doubt he would have the means of support a wife, ii would think his marriage would be a while later, maybe 1930ish but that's just based on guesswork
From experience in my tree, where there are several Nellies, is that they have all been Helen in actual fact ... sometimes spelt Hellen. Also have you tried searching with wildcards ... as in John Car* .... you may find the L in his surname was perhaps recorded as a T or something similar .... either this or an error in the transcribing which is also common

that certainly sounds a better bet chestnut, the right county / RD and about the right year too, he could order it direct from the Chesterfield register office for 7 plus an sae which is cheaper and they will be quicker usually too.

it used to be that local offices were unable to provide marriage certificates as they had a copy register for every church performing ceremonies and they needed to know the church or it was a long search, even with the quarter and year from the gro index, these days they have computerised indexes and find it in second with the names year and quarter from the gro, so it does save money.
