Carry On!

Great that UKGOLD was showing some Carry On films today. My friend and I were discussing which Carry On films are best- the "real life" ones, such as Cabby, Loving, Camping or the ones set in history such as Up the Kyber, Cleo etc.

What is your favourite Carry On film?!

Camping. Don't think I've seen all of them, but that's my favourite so far!

I remember going to pictures years ago must have been one of the first films I ever seen Carry on up the Jungle worst one must be Carry on England I think it was the one with Windsor Davies as the drill instructor.

We should be ashamed of making such rubbish. When you look at French comic movies, particularly my favourites, by Jacques Tati, we don't hold a candle to them. We have the best comedians in the world, but about the only funny movies we can come up with are these terrible things. I've never understood the attraction, but each to his own...!

Carry On Henry.  Syd James was brilliant in these and without him the Carry on films  would not have been as successful

For me it would have to be the historical films, particularly Khyber and the wonderful stiff-upper-lip meal under bombardment. Possibly these don't "date" so badly. I don't agree that we should be ashamed of them. They are in an honourable tradition of music hall, farce, slapstick and bawdy humour with a long pedigree and also a chance to see incredibly popular and talented comedy actors such as Syd James, Hattie Jacques, Kenneth Williams etc in their prime. I used to feel I understood why they don't "travel" but given the popularity of "gross-out" comedy in the States and the late Benny Hill both there and in Europe I find it less obvious.

Carry on don't lose your head-is my favourite, with :-Sid James as Sir Rodney Ffing. and Kenneth Williams as Citizen Cmembert and Count Henri de la Plume de Ma Tante, Charles Hawtry as the Duc de Pomfritt and Peter Butterworth as Citizen Bidet. What could be better ?

I was never keen on the Carry On films.   I saw one or two.  I did like Frankie Howerd in one - was that Carry On Caesar?  I preferred the ones with Dirk Bogarde as a Doctor.  (Doctor in the House, Doctor at Sea. Perhaps there were only those two?)

Don't Lose Your Head, the French Revolution is my favourite. The Black Fingernail was a great character.

I loved the carry on films. Real british comedy before all this PC nonsense. My favourite was carry on screaming, I actually met Fenella Fielding a couple of times, and she's excatly the same in real life! Carry on spying was good too, with the evil hamaphrodite dr, they dont show that one much though...

I think I might cast another vote for Don't Lose Your Head, but also feel I should mention that Carry On Cowboy - not previously mentioned on this thread - is one of my favourites. I really enjoyed Jim Dale's contribution tto tthis series.  His 'Jeckyll to Hyde' transformation in ...Screaming is a wonderful piece of acting.

In answer to your original question Scarlett I would go for the historical ones as I believe these to have more of a defined story.

Flaming, I think you're getting a bit confused regarding Frankie Howerd.  He appeared in 'Carry On Up The Jungle' and 'Carry On Doctor'.

The film you describe as 'Carry On Caesar' is most likely 'Up Pompeii', which is one of the Frankie Howerd 'Up...' series of films (the others being 'Up Front' and 'Up the Chastity Belt').  And yes, Up Pompeii was a great film!
