I am classified by HM Customs and Exercise as self employed so have to pay my own tax and my wife works for me, receiving a regular weekly salary paying PAYE and NIC. However, I have been suspended from work for health reasons but my wife says she has been told she cannot claim unemployment benefit as she works for me. Is this true?

how can you be self employed and still manage to be suspended? Sorry if I'm missing something, but....
Whickerman makes a good point but as to your immediate problem, yes, of course it's true. Your wife isn't unemployed so how could she claim unemployment benefit?
