My son is applying to join the royal marines but he needs to gain a stone before his first fitness test can anyone tell me what sort of foods I should be giving him

How much does he weigh and how tall is he? He perhaps needs to see how many calories he currently consumes, perhaps he's not eating enough.

The average man requires 2500 cals per day to maintain current weight. He maybe needs to up calorific intake above that, especially if he leads an active lifestyle.

In order to gain weight, more calories must be consumed than what is burnt off. To gain just one pound a week, an extra 3,500 calories from food is needed. The 3,500 extra calories per week should not come from junk food, but from nutritious meals and snacks.

* Drink a lot of pure fruit juice or milk with and between meals. Juices that are mixed with two or more juices (such as strawberry-kiwi) are higher in calories than a drink that is only one juice.
