Tesco's are also 63p each. However they do have multipacks. Can't remember the price, but it works out much cheaper each. I buy them, slice them and freeze them for use in chillis and spag bol.
Sorry this is prob too late for you but for future reference

For large amounts of any king of veg I head over to our asian district and go to the shops there!!

As an example a 5kg bag of onions can be just under 2 and in asda you pay that for about 5
I know the asian cusine use peppers alot so they would be a good starting point
Manchester is Cheetham Hill
Luton - Bury Park

Im sure you can find your local one

Good Luck and enjoy
I agree with tazmac, we have several good Asian stores, where the fruit and veg is cheaper than supermarket. You can also buy as much or as little as you like, as it`s not prepacked. Brilliant for herbs and spices.
I also buy lamb and chicken, much more tasty, and cheaper than supermarket, or even our local market.
