Anybody any suggestions on to how to soften non leather shoe uppers and stop chafing on bridge of foot

The trouble with non leather is that you can stretch it but it tends to shrink back quickly. You could try stuffing the shoes very firmly with material (unless you have an adjustable shoe tree which would be better) after first using warmth to soften the upper - maybe use a hairdryer but not on too high a setting! Leave the shoes stuffed for as long as you can and warm them from time to time. This may help.
