Rash after taking antibiotics
13 Answers
Hey peeps, looking for some advice. Last week was on antibiotics (amoxicillin) for a nasty chest cough. Finished them on Sunday and felt fine, then woke up on Tuesday with a red rash all over my upper body, it is particularly itchy on my back. Have still got it today and bought some hypercortisone cream, but want to know do u think I should go to the doctors, or will it just get better on its own? Thanks

Have you had penicillin before?
If not then that sounds very like an allergy to it.
My daugher is allergic to peniicillin or amocycillin (same) and she has a red rash from top to toes which is indicitive of an allergic reaction. She was only 2 when this happened and hasnt taken it since -the GP confirmed this.
Maybe best to visit your GP for him to have a look at the rash its very different when its an allergy apparently..

I am allergic to penicillin, I took mine and came out in a rash (like stinging nettle rash) from head to toe, it was unbearably itchy and I passed out. I carried on and took my next one the morning after, the same thing happened and my face also started to swell up, and go red and sore around my eys, nose and mouth and I found it harder to breathe. When I went for allergy blood testing they said if the reaction happens within the first half hour of taking it then you are very allergic to it. My advice would be to go to the doctors next time you need antibiotics and explain your symptoms before taking it again. At the moment wait and see if it dies down by itself, if not book an appointment
hi kirsty, my three children have all had this rash throughout their lives. You can imagine how panicky i was the first time i saw it on my first baby!
Anyway, I think it's the last of the infection that's all. That's what various doctors and health visitors have told me over the years. It is always after they have been poorly, as they start to feel better.
It is usually on their chest and shoulder area.

I had something similar many years ago Kirsty. I had had my tonsils taken out and was prescribed penicillin until I came out of hospital. I was then prescribed amoxicilln for a further 4 days and ended up in a rash all over my body. My GP called round and he gave me some piriton which eased the itching. I think I'd basically overdosed on antibiotics and I haven't taken any since then and that was nearly 20 years ago.
The trouble with antibiotics is that whilst its killing off the bad bacteria it is also killing off good bacteria which is why a lot of people suffer with diarrohea (sp) and other things associated with the lack of good bacteria.

TB -thats what happened with my daughter -she was admitted to hospital -quite ill -and they gave her powerful dose of penicillin -then the rash appeared so she cant take any chances now as we dont know what the ramifications would be.She had amoxycillin before had and was OK but its diluted for wee people so wasnt apparent. She will never be administered that again -she is fine with Emoxocylin -does the trick for her (not penicillin based)
