why is it still called a secret ballot?  when you go to vote they always write down your polling number on the stub where your ballot paper was torn from.

It's secret as opposed to in "olden days" when you just raised a hand in an open room.  The ballot was then totally open to manipulation as everyone felt forced to toe-the-line with their boss or landlord.  They brought in secret votes to prevent this.
