They will also have access to details of anyone you have an 'association' with - this is usually a partner (husband / wife) with whom at somepoint you have applied for credit with.
If the previous occupant had a similar surname (eg smith) it is conceivable that an erroneus association has been made, however, under normal circumstances, a lender will not be aware of any details of the previous occupant.
If you do have a similar surname, try getting hold of your credit file (from Experian and Equifax - do google searchesand their websites will come up). If there is any wrong details on there, you can take it up with them. (file a notice of disassociaiton etc).
