Why did he lie?

i have a friend who has a boyfriend that she wont shut up about, so I told her I liked this kid in Science Club to say i liked someone. She ran and told him and he admitted that he liked. me. We've been going back and forth through my friend, but today I found out that he was telling everybody we were going out. I asked him about it and he said he didn't do that, but I have proof that he did. He also lied when he told me he didn't like anybody, when he did. What';s the deal? I dont like the gossip surrounding us, because I'm a year older, but I like him so, what do I do?

2, accept that people tell lies,

I cannot believe how nasty people have been to you on this site. I hope they reread their comments and feel ashamed. Please don't take any notice...at least one of the respondents is extremely unpopular on here and known for catty comments. It isn't really appropriate as it is obvious that you are still quite young.
In answer to your question, it wasn't exactly a lie...just a little white lie because your male friend was feeling a bit nervous, as you and your female friend have been a bit pushy with him. Just chill out and regard him as a great male friend, rather than a potential boyfriend, and you will get on fine.
btw I don't think a year's age gap makes a lot of difference.
