Senior Notes

Why do companies occasionally have cash tender offers to purchase the principal amount of x% of their Senior Notes? Is this to raise internal cash? What is the benefit?

Where are you located? I've never heard of a senior note.

If it's what it sounds like it's to get rid of excess cash by in effect repaying debt.
