They were usually referred to as "the trenches" with the furthest forward trenches being referred to as "the front line" or just " the front". The Front could also be used to refer to the whole complex of ternches including support and communications trenches and artlllery positions to distinguish it from the Rear where troops assembled, trained, rested and recovered from periods of duty in more forward positions. In 19a6/17 the Germans built a series of prepared positions between Verdun and Lens which they called the Hindenburg Line. This was divided into sections named after characters from German mythology - Wotan, Alberich, Siegfried, Brunhilde and Kriemhilde.

Siegfried Line was a WWII structure referred to as the Westwall by the Germans. It was the British who called it the Siegfried Line harking back to the Siegfried section of the WWI Hindenburg Line.

The Maginot Line was built by the French between WWI and WWII.
