buying off internet
my sister recently purchased something off the internet and paid with her debit card. within 14 days of receiving the goods she emailed the company and asked for no further supplies to be sent to her, she received an email back straight away declaring that they had cancelled her membership and she would receive no further supplies or charges. she has not received any further supplies but when she saw her bank statement she noticed they had taken several payments out, she has emailed them back about 4 times but received no reply, she also rang the bank to stop further payments but the bank says she entered into a contract with the company, apparently she isnt the only one to of done this, and the bank says she has to give 30 days notice, so in the meantime this company could take as much money out of her account as they wish!! she is now writing a letter to the company which is in cyprus, are the bank right in saying this .thanks for any help

The bank has said they will write to this company asking why they are still taking out payments when the membership was cancelled. Just 10 mins ago my sis actually got an email from the company saying it was cancelled in feb and asking for the amounts and company name which appear on her bank statement.
hi pink -kittens apparently even if you cancel the card they can use the new one you'd be issued with - my goodness this is certainly a warning to everyone out there! My sister is going to close the account if she doesnt get a reply by monday from the company saying they will refund the monies. i think this is going to be the only way to get peace of mind.
With a debit card you may a problem demanding your money back. Especially from a company overseas. I would say it is definitely a scam. Also a debit card are not covered as it would for a credit card. I would just close the account that is if there is no overdraft facility. Write to the bank and tell them they are not being cooperative as your are their customer not the company's they allow all the payments to be deducted from your account. I have no problem with my bank to immediately stop any payments made with my credit card contract or not.
