The dogs were called 'Toy Spaniels' until Charles II actually named them after himself because he loved them so much, in fact he was rarely seen without 1 or 2 of them at his side.  He also wrote into law that they would be allowed into all public buildings including the houses of parliament and by all account this decree is still in existence today in England.

My answer is less informative than the previous one, which was very interesting. I always though they just looked alike. Have you seen the paintings of King Charles?
