Land Registry or your local Council should be able to find out. Both may well charge a fee though... failing that, ask a local estate agent, they may well know who owns it. Ask the neighbours.

Great, thanks. I'll try your suggestions.
If the land is registered, you may be able to find it here for a small fee.

This is no reason for the local council to be able to tell you.
if you can go to a title office,at the nearest courthouse,or the deeds office,at the tax assesor, office, city or county office, register of deeds, office, they should have it,and also you can ask a surveyor,a person who does survey work to make sure, that the future owner knows what he is going to buy.
That maybe true in the US but it's absolutely no help on this side of the pond.
my friend used this company:
http://www.findermonkey.co.uk/unregistered-lan d-buildings

they helped him find out who owned a piece of land near his house that he wanted to buy.

Hi,
Thanks to all for your help. I found a website called www.landsearch.net that charges 57 (cheaper than findermonkey) and they got me all the info I needed.
Thanks again.
