confused or stupid!!!!

i found an old school mate on facebook, and every so often he would send me a message on there asking for my number and if he could take me out. i wasn ready to start seeing anybody so i said no.
anyway i saw him out last saturday night and he sent me another mesage the next day for my number and i did give it him, the following day he sent me a text sayin he likes me but he always ends up back with his kids mum and dont want me geting mixed up in his shi**y life.
i dont get it, he has been asking for my number for nearly a year he gets it then blows me out.....
am i missing something?!?!?
