Can mobile phone/ laptop transformers really work through a 100 to 240v range or do you still need to use power converters to increase volate when using UK bought, electronic devices in USA and Canada?

Some can, some can't - you need to read the spec for the specific device.
If the label on the charger/power supply says ''Input: 100/240v 50/60 Hz'' then you'll have no problem - you won't need any kind of converter.
