Is Google playing April Fool? Until now I have been able to delete browsing history by clicking Tools> Internet Options> Delete> Delete history. From today I have only to enter one or two letter in the search box and a list of ten possible search subject appears that I don't wish to see, and the number of times they've been visited, for example l - lotto 34,200.000 results. Yes, I can click to close the display box, but find this added imposition infuriating. Some other search engines have started behaving in a similar way and I'm searching for one that does not. Does anyone know of one please?

You seem to be confusing you search history with your browsing history. The action you took will delete your browsing history. Assuming that you have the Google toolbar, then to delete your search history, click on the dropdown arrow to the right of the Google search box, scroll to the bottom and click Clear History.
Should have mentioned that you can change the way it behaves by clicking "Settings" at the far right of the toolbar, choosing Options, then clicking the button "Search Box Settings"
Oh, and that 34,200.000 is not the number of times they've been visited, it's the number of pages that Google has found with that particular key word.

Thanks rojash. It's a curious set-up. I use two browsers - Internet Explorer and Firefox and both opened with Google search engine.

With IE, if I enter k in the search box I then see a list of ten possible searches including kwick fit, k l m, kuoni, k f c and others, which I haven't visited or wish to see. Oddly I found this happened with IE and Google but not with Firefox and Google.

I've therefore left Google and Firefox as they were and made Alta Vista my default search engine with IE. Hope this does not sound too complicated, but one never knows what is going to happen next with modern technology. Interesting to know if anyone else has the sort of experience.
open the Google and you see the Google search box. near the Google search box you will see the preferences tab . click on the preferences tab .

select the do not provide the query suggestions in the search box.

Thank you jonpol. I hadn't previously explored the preferences tab and it does resolve my little moan, so I'll go back to Google with IE. Maybe others will also find your advice useful. Can't help wondering why/how it arose in the first place.
