Serious Advice needed for getting into Medicine for a total outsider
3 Answers
I am almost 25 years old and I've worked ever since leaving Sixth Form (with only a Btec Diploma in Science under my name) with no Higher Education experience whatsoever, as it never really my interest, until now.
For almost a year I've been toying with the idea of becoming a Medical Student (in one or two years time), I hope in my situation this is not considered a 'pipe-dream', as I seriously need some advice on getting into the course.

I did the BTEC ONC and HNC part time. When I left to go to college full time, all the colleges were very impressed with the HNC (as it is equivalent to the first year of a degree) and I could go to the college of my choice with just a pass (admittedly I didn't choose medicine nor Oxbridge). I guess what I am saying is that you should follow your dream and colleges are always open to people that haven't gone through the school > O > A level route. Indeed, I had a college friend who studied medicine after his degree! I would think about getting qualifications equivalent to A levels/HNC/HND as they may have a minimum requirement that cannot be over-ridden. Good luck.
Good answer from j2buttonsw, I would just like to add a piece of what seems condescending or boring advice, but I really think it is true.
"25 years old" seems 'old' viewed from the perspective of an 18 year old going to medical school, but from the perspective of a 35 year old in the wrong job, 25 is very young and a great time to think about making a big 'dream' decision. Go for it. Just never think you're too old.
