It usually starts with bad, or more often no parenting to speak of. Children learn a sense of right and wrong from their families, and a lot grow up in criminal households, or without guidance at important times of their lives.
These people usually end up unable to really direct and control their lives - they live while certain things simply happen to them and they lack the skills to be able to look ahead and make sound judgements about what is right and wrong, either for them as individuals, or for those around them.
For young women, a need for love and affection can lead them into ongoing bad relationships with men who abuse them, or turn them out on the streets as addicts or prostitutes, often both - and from there it is a short step to pregnancy and / or prison.
I can guess than even not having seen the series, that some of my analysis will ring true with the young women that have ended up in prison.
Here's a worrying statistic for you? How many street prostitutes are either adicts themselves, or support a partner who is an addict? The answer is all of them - 100%.
Until we address parenting skills at nursery level, this issue will never be addressed properly.

i watched this and in part it annoyed me.
Although I see the need for treating these young ladies with a certain amount of respect,I cant help feeling that if prisoners were treated like prisoners and not naughty little girls, then it might stand them in god stead for when they got out. There is no deterent at this prison,or indeed any prison for keeping offenders out.It seems that going inside is a very minor inconvienence to them.
Having said that it is obvious that some of the young ladies needed more help mentally that what this prison could offer and that is worrying.

i have been watching this Velvetee, its sad the way some of the girls are because of their up-bringing, but no wondor they call it "Hotel Holloway", what a doddle, tv in the rooms, gym, pool, jobs, free food, smoking, party in the cells, tell you what book me in for a week!!! they love being in prison!!!
yes sara, you are right, i have a priveliged life and would probably find it hell, i just think they are not strict enough with the girls, they seem to love going there!!! There does'nt seem to be any help on the outside, and like carter69 says some of them need help mentally, i suppose its a vicious circle really x
I think you're right. I have a friend who works in a prison (in the education dept), we went to a spa this week and I said, "I'd love to try an Indian head massage". she said, "the prisoners get that!" I was astounded. then she said it really helps them with anger management issues, and keeps the prison running smoother.
bizarre really!
