lowering interest rates when the price of food is going up. Kind of defeats the object in my opinion.

I read a BBC News online article this morning that said food had gone up 18% in the past year...and some staples such as rice by as much as 50% . Shocking really. Those on low incomes-for whom a drop im interest rates means nothing-have to resort to buying tinned and processed rubbish.
