For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.hey that takes me way way back! i remember they used to suffer when the oil was'nt changed so that it dried out the rocker shaft, making it near impossible to set the valves correctly. also, watch for wear on the rockers themselves where they push on the valves stems. the resultant groove stops you measuring the gap accurately with feeler gauges....

I never worked on an Escort Mk1 or Mk2 unfortunately (though they had a few Ford engine test beds to work on at college). The rockershaft was always gunked up with dried oil, made it very difficult to set the tappets correctly. Also the top of the valve would leave an imprint in the rocker arm through wear, is that the groove that you mention v64paul?
