Clerkenwell was rather a run-down commercial area until recent years, but now it has 'come up' with old warehouse/office buildings /flats/refurbished. There are a lot of art galleries, swish new apartments, etc. It's still got a unique character, just, but it is much changed this last few years. There was quite a large Italian community at one time. Also, there was quite a number of printing/publishing houses, their buildings now converted or demolished. Only last week I saw another one gone down.. It isn't what you'd call a residential area. It is quite near St. Paul's Cathedral. Long ago it was the hotbed of political disturbances.
If you have one of those super-duper computers that has lots of bells and whistles on it, check out this superb piece of animation called Bathtime in Clerkenwell by '(The Real) Tuesday Weld' aka 'The Clerkenwell Kid'.
