What are your thoughts on G4?  My music tastes are varied to say the least but who on earth gave them a license to crucify Radiohead's 'Creep'?

I never really thought of it like that.

I just cannot see the attraction.  I guess if you like that kind of music then great, the same as anything I suppose.

As Andy points out, Radiohead fans probably aren't fans of G4. I for one have never heard of them (out of touch with 'pop music' for the last 4 years or so). I could moan about Scissor Sisters' cover of Comfortably Numb though.... grrr.

Personally, I think this moronic regurgitation of songs exposes the music industry for what it really is.

I agree. I hate what the S Sisters did to 'Comfortably Numb' and will never forgive them! These classic's should never be touched!!!!!

Some cover versions are better than the originals. Santana's cover of She's Not There by the Troggs, is far more exciting.
What get's my goat however is when teenagers do not know a song is a cover version. I overheard some time back a group of teenage girls heaping praise on Atomic Kittens awful rendition of The Tide is High, until I pointed out the song is over 20 years old.
Mind you the original wasnt much better...

Like Andy I find G4 bland and uninspiring.  Not at all individual.  They have crucified Radiohead's 'Creep' (I am a Radiohead fan) - and their version of Bohemian Rhapsody may well be technically perfect but is wooden and without emotion. Visually, their performances are diabolical.

They are appearing on all the current TV shows, ie. Abba and Queen specials, and they are being marketed continuously, but they have nothing about them that makes for star quality or endurance.

As you can see, I really like them!

i really dont see the fascination with listening to some talentless act singing covers.g4,steve brookstein etc etc

if i wanted to listen to those songs i would listen to the far superior originals !

and as for creep which is a bit of a classic, which idiot gave permission for them to cover it ?

I know this might not have anything to do with this but bigdogswang (love the name) is right about bands not knowing about the song they are covering.

When Westlife did the travesty of covering the Rat Pack songs 0n Allow Me To Be Frank I Heard an interview on Radio where they said and I quote" We are not jumping on the jazz/big band bandwagon we just like the Rat Pack because of their Wholesome "family Vibe".

Now correct me if I am Wrong But when Frank, Dino Sammy Davis Jr and the rest of them did the Las Vegas gigs all they ever did was party all night and drink all night and strike up meaningful relationships with as many women as possible.

Thanks for that I feel better now I've got that off my chest (cannot stand Westlife)

Just another song they've completely wrecked. Their cover of REM's Everybody Hurts also lacked any sense of meaning.

I don't think they have much of a shelf life. Their music only sells because people find it qwerky to listen to different versions of songs they know. People will eventually (i hope) get bored of listening to them cover yet another popular song. If/when they try and release a brand new song written by their record company (if they still have a record contract by then), they'll probably have a minor hit and then fade out for good.

I live in hope........

EXACTLY natalie! I really really really wish they hadn't bothered.

The first time i heard SS cover of Comfortably Numb i thought the Bee Gees had taken a few too many drugs ! But over time it really has grown on me. ( I now have the album, which is excellent ! ) As Andy says, it's just someone elses perspective on a great song. Incidentally, If there are any Pink Floyd fans around Liverpool on the 15/16th July, The Australian Pink Floyd are playing at the Kings Dock. I saw them last week and they are just amazing !! I swear you can easily forget your not watching and listening to the real band !! See you there if you can all make it !!

BigDogsWang - are you talking about Blondie's 'original' of The Tide Is High when moaning about people not realising when a song is a cover version? If so, you have a nice line in irony, I'll give you that. :-)

As for G4, they've had a go at Everybody Hurts? Right, that does it. If anyone wants to join my angry lynch mob, I'll provide the rope but I'm afraid you'll have to bring your own flaming torches and packed lunch.
I'm with you littleoldme!  Flaming torch at the ready.

littleoldme - you must have noticed I never stated 'Blondie' as the original artist, that's because I didn't know who the original artist was! All I knew is that it was well over 20 years ago.

Turns out it's John Holt over 30 years ago. It's also been covered by Greg Isaacs.

Why would so many people want to cover such a naff song?

i neva herd radioheads version but i feel i shud stand up 4 g4 coz i love them n i thought creep was ace!!!!!!!! leave g4 alone!!!!!!
Should'nt there be an age restriction on this site?
