Hi,

I'm doing a critical analysis essay on an extract from The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville. Does anybody know the term used to describe the literary feature by which an adjective describes a word which is not normaly associated with.

For example:
"a big quiet light"
"a band of sun cast a slice of black shadow"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Could be oxymoron
It isnt an oxymoron because thats where you use opposites in the same sense... ie Living Dead

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Literary_devices is a list of literary devices. I cant seem to find yours exactly but it could be personification.... not sure.

hope this helps

Thank you both for your help,
I'm not certain that it is one definite one from that list - perhaps its personification of a sort, but i also found another term from that list which will be helpful for another section of my essay. So thank you :)
