Overtaking a police car

What happens if I do this? I mean overtake in exactly the same way as I would any other car.

Nothing - as long as you are obeying the speed limit and the rest of the Highway Code.

The police often drive below the speed limit for many reasons, including that they see more that way.  They are often surprised that nobody wants to overtake them.  Of course if they are driving at what they consider to be the maximum safe speed (not the same as the speed limit) they might be interested.

It's just my dad always warned me never to overtake one, but never explained why. He also told me he'd never buy a red car, as apparently they attract the attention of the police. He was driving a Rover 200.

There is no reason earth why you should not overtake a police car as long as it is safe and legal, unless you have a guilty conscience......

The highway code states that you should drive to the legal limit as long as all conditions allow.

I've often over take a police patrol car on a motorway. Nothing happens as long as you stick you the speed limit applied.

But you will be stopped if you under take.

How often do you find the trafic bunched up on a Motorway behind a Police car doing about 65 and everyone terrified of overtaking?

I reckon slow moving police cars cause as many jams as idiots using the break pedal on the motorways!  I agree with everything everyone else said.  I drive a red car and I've never been stopped - but then the police have never seen me trying to park it! :-p

assuming you overtake all other cars legaly and safely nothing as already stated.
