function keys on the keyboard

Keyboard keys F1 to F12 - I am sure I used to be able to program these myself - using autoexec.bat ? - how can I do it now (using XP)?

Thanks chris - had a quick browse - seems very complicated for something that used to be simple - (if only I could remember how!)
