It came to me on Friday night like a bolt from the blue! It is a reference to Bonaparte - but it's not a French word.

The clue is a bit vague. Try this one as an alternative: "Take military steps to achieve unexpected charm" (5)

Other solvers: let domestic have first crack at this

I'm intrigued now, Crofter. I think I've solved your alternative clue, but I can't relate the answer to the original clue about Napoleon/Bonaparte!
