Why the reverence towards chefs?

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why chefs have become so revered in recent years? So they can cook...big deal! Many of the TV chefs strike me as complete plonkers, yet bizarrely they're treated as Gods. Ramsay and Pierre-White seem like boorish bullies more than anything else, which makes them dubious role models, yet they're celebrated for this behaviour. Why do the celeb contestants on Hell's Kitchen not only put up with the way Pierre-White talks to them in such a condescending and rude manner but actually quake in their boots when he's around? Pathetic. If he spoke to me like that I'd tip a vat of steaming poo over him and walk straight out the door.

when I cook I use utensils for turning/dishing up etc - the way they fiddle about touching every bit of food, I wouldn't want to eat it anyway!
IT's all a show, they are all acting. Politeness does not gain viewers but rudeness does I'm afraid. I think people used to enjoy cookery shows when it was about creativity, the putting together of a nice meal. The modern cookery shows are plain rubbish, pandering to the lowest common denominator.
I hate all those fiddley bits they put on each meal.The bit where they put a long line of sauce or whatever it is on the plate, it always looks to me like a cat has just vomitted. :-{
These shows have become a variation of 'Celebrity Big Brother' with people who will do anything and put up with anything to appear on television. The times we live in!
