ladies and barbershops

As  there  seems to  be  a lot of hair questions about  and the net has loads  of hair sites i was wondering  if any  ladies  reading  here  have ever had there  haircut/trimmed  in a barbershop as an adult or child? If so  how did  you feel about it ?did you like it ok?

As a child, my mum used to take us to the barbershop to get our hair cut .... I guess that then, just as now, it was cheaper than going to a designated hairdressers !

However, the cut was very functional and as a girl, I hated it and was well aware even aged 6 or so of sitting in a "male" environment.

I know from getting my son's hair cut that barber's charge on average about �6-7 pounds for a child's cut .... whereas my (unisex) hairdresser charged �15 for a child ! No competition really ...... but I wouldn't take my baby daughter to a barbers for her first haircut.

Thanks for that gilli  very interesting. Up  to what  age were you taken to this barbers  and how long  or short  was the haircut you got. As a boy at school  i hated and loathed the barbers and always wondered  if some girls indeed got barber haircuts because the shop was nearest or cheaper.Id love to chat a little more about those days  if you didnt mind.  john

I think it was from when we had our 1st hair cuts to about the age of 7. I expect it was probably because that was where my dad went ..... my mum used to do her own hair and have a friend trim it for her. After 7, the same friend then trimmed us children too ..... though I can't remember the details, I suspect at about that age I started to become more particular about my hair ! Up till then my mum had always wanted it "sensibly" short  .... don't get me wrong we weren't given short back and sides, but had a very plain, just touching the collar style.

Thanks Gilli  your answers actually  remind me of how i felt at that time intimadated  , the older men  watching ,the male enverioment  would be harder as a girl too.For  some reason i used to  shiver a bit  as the barber  put the big nylon cape over me i still remember it was royal blue  even now  i think this was the sign to me there was no going back the cape trapped me and this old guy  was going to clipper me real short.I take it  it was a man too that cut your hair im amazed because i cant think many barbers in my time would have cut a girl though im not sure.(im in my 40s uk Gilli)  how many of you were there in the family? Do  you have much memory of the actual  getting in the chair being cut?  I felt my turn felt like execution time silly i know  but that how it felt  guess i wasnt a very confident child then   not like nowadays.Love hearing your story  thankyou so much  john   Hope to hear a bit more if possible.

I went to the barbers last year when my fringe desperately needed cutting and due to circumstances (mother-in-law had just had a heart attack) I didn't have time to go to the hairdressers and I know from past experience that I can't cut my own fringe! Anyway, even though I got one or two strange looks from some of the other customers I waited my turn, had my fringe cut, and he very kindly did it for nothing (though I do take my two sons there for their hair cuts). I had absolutely no problem with going in there, and if circumstances dictated I would do so again.

Thats nice   thanks   you were brave certainly  not many would try a barbers  how long is your hair?  did you get the back trimmed too?

No I didn't get the back trimmed, though it could really have done with it. I should really have made an appointment for the hairdressers, but then my mother-in-law was very ill in hospital, so I just didn't have time, but I couldn't stand not being able to see through my fringe, so it just seemed the easiest option. I suppose it helped that I do take my sons to that barbers, so he recognised me.

I hope your mother in law recovered ok by the way .Yes  it certainly  sounds as though your local barbers  is ok i can see you going for a full trim sometime.I think  in uk  barbers are very slowly.......... beginning to cut/trim womens hair  due to the high cost of salons. Have  you long hair yourself  or a bob ect?  The first lady  i ever saw  in a barbers had long blonde hair  getting the ends trimmed after her boyfriend had his cut i stood  looking in the shop window mesmerised this young woman would trust a mens barbers to cut her hair it kinda gave me strange feelings  of my childhood why i dont know . Is it  a small  or large shop the barbers you use? Its  great to hear from some of you about this  thankyou for taking the time to reply  . john

It is a small barbers that I go to, and I'm the only woman I've seen in there having her hair cut. I do normally go to the hairdressers and get my hair coloured (covering up the grey) at the same time, so can't see me using the barbers again except in an emergency!. By the way my Mother-in-law did recover thankfully, gave us all a shock though!. Maybe I'll be at the barbers again soon as I had an appointment for the hairdressers today which I've had to cancel as I'm waiting in for the washing machine repair man!

why not try  a barbers trim them spudqueen  he certainly  sounds a decent guy .I much prefer small barbershops  actually i use a 2 chair place myself with lady barber.What colour  of haircapes does your local shop use?  Its all black ones about here very boring the ones i see in usa pics look much nicer  red ,blue  ,purples ,yellow ect. I dont know why uk hairdressers are so stuck on black.
