I am going to America in the summer, if I bought a hand held games console ie gameboy advance sp, would I encounter any problems apart from a different charger. It is about half the cost of buying one here.

All of these handheld consoles are region-free for their games, so you'll be able to bring it back over here and play games you bought from the US or games that you buy here in the UK or elsewhere.
It's a totally different story if you're talking about home consoles, which are all region restricted, but you'll be fine with the handhelds.
