I've actually never heard that phrase Mary.....other half yes..
It originally referred not to a husband or wife but a good friend.

I never call my hubby my better half sometimes my other half but never better

Craft, maybe it is Irish orientated, often hear people say when introducing, this is my better half!
I think they introduce them as the better part of the partnership, making themselves the worse part of the duo, I would imagine its a complimentary statement?
i can't answer that , the wife obviously could but she don't use AB.
It's an expression that's used down in southern England Mary but people tend not to say "my better half" - rather they refer to other peoples better half.
I don't have a better half - what you see is what you get!

I dont even like using my other half I am a whole, my bloke is just my added bonus :-)
