sunscreen for cats

our new adopted cat, ghost, is all white, with a pink nose and ears and we have been told to sunscreen him before he goes out in the sun, using a sun-screen that is non-toxic to cats..... any suggestions please?

All of the vets' surgeries around here look more like a supermarket when you walk into the building. I'm sure that your local vet would be able to sell you something suitable.

trt....white cats are very prone to SKIN CANCER.....if any owner wants to protect their car-particularly the ears,then sunscreen is sensible.

In all seriousness mandimoo, white cats ARE prone to skin cancer, and as they love to lay out in the sun, so it's maybe best to protect them. I'm sure your local vet can suggest what's best to use.

I read somewhere during the week that lotion for children is suitable for cats as it is non-toxic.

Might ruin Ghost's street cred if you make him wear a sun hat though.

whatever you apply will be licked off. Best to keep the cat indoors during sunlight.

Agree with tamborine, because even children's sunscreen contains chemicals that might not be suitable if a cat licks it off.

Mandimoo. 'Boots Soltan 50+ for Kids' was recommended by the vet for white cats. The parts of cat covered by fur are ok. Its the backs and fronts of the ears, and the the bit below the ears where the ear meets the face where there is no fur, that are the important parts, and the top of the nose. These parts are very prone to skin cancer in white cats. There's a photo somewhere on the net of a cat who had both his ears removed for the problem. He did look strange, but had a lovely face. I do hope you take the good advice offered by some posters, and better still check with the vet. Hope Ghost is doing well. Love Schutz. PS. Where the protection needs to go is in places where they can't lick it off. It will come off as the cat washes itself, and during sunny periods the lotion needs to be renewed each day.

we use boots baby sunscreen on the horses and they lick it and they are fine. It could be different with cats though
