Electricity Box & Meter

Who is responsible for the maintenance of the mains box and meter?
I ask because I have found woodworm or something has eaten the backing board which holds the mains box and meter and rendered them dangerous.
The energy supplier told me that I would be charged �35 fo each of two visits; one to disconnect and later after a new board had been fitted, to re-connect.

I wondered if it was not their responsibility to ensure their equipment was maintained.

Any advice gratefully received.

I do stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure that you are responsible for anything on your property, ie from where the electricity supply enters your boundary.
Haven't you ever had those flyers telling you that damage to your water supply pipe/electric main can be expensive so insure with us?

For some reason I had it in my head that the meter box was the property of the Electric Company and you should not go near it.

I should have read those flyers before chucking them out!

I would say that the electric company own the cables up to and including the meter itself - I would doubt they have an interest on what it is mounted on.

Woodchopper is right but it is hard to give a def answer on this one.
It is the electric comps responsibilities to their meter and to fix it to the wall or whatever, so I would question them about what they are trying to charge you.
But you would have to get an electrician in to re-fix the fuse board.

It really is a sort of chicken and egg situation here but don't let the lecky company try to bluff you on this one

The incoming cable, fuse and meter is the property of the electricity supplier and the fuse/circuit breaker board is the property of the householder. What you could do is keep your eyes open for an Eon engineer and ask him if he could change the wooden board that the meter is fitted to and mention �20 for his troubles and I think you'll get it done....
