My son wants to hire a tuxedo for his leavers ball but is adamant that he won't wear a bow tie - can you wear a normal tie with a tux? I think it would look wrong but don't know if anyone else has tried this before?

I used to work in a kilt/dress hire shop and we had heaps of different styles of shirt/jacket/tie combinations because most teenage boys feel silly wearing a bow tie.  If he isn't keen on wearing a tie at all, you could see if you can get a Nero (sometimes called a Nehru) suit.  It's collarless and looks a bit like a Japanese boy's school uniform.  Looks pretty cool in my opinion.  A nice change from what everone else will have.

I agree with the others.  The problem, I suppose, is that the tuxedo needs the wing collar, and the wing collar needs the bow tie.  So without the bowtie with wing collar looks silly.  But without the wing collar the tuxedo looks silly.

Try telling him this though - if he can tie his own, or get someone to tie it for him, then he can untie it after the last course/before coffee and he will look ultimately sexy with it draped casually round his neck like James Bond/George Clooney in Ocean's 11.  In fact, some boys I know wear a pre-tied one, then replace it with a traditional one draped around their neck later on!!  Might convince him to stick with tradition! :-)

No one at my leavers do wore a normal tie - all the boys looked so good in their bow ties! So smart compared with their usual scruffs! I think he should wear one - tell him to think James Bond.

for a tux, you don't need a wing collar shirt, as long as it is a dress shirt but you do really need a bow tie, though you don't have to tie it ( as annacwood says).. see link
