Texting in China

Is texting in China non-existant , given that you couldn't have a mobile phone full of Chinese characters ?

Texting is very very common in China - voice mails are practically non existent and texting is far cheaper than a phone call.

In addition to the traditonal Chinese script there is a version of the language written with Latin characters called Pinyin. I ewxpect this is used for text massages.
