holiday in usa
next year we are planning to take our children and grandchildren to the usa. the children are planning a short trip to nashville and memphis and leaving the grandchildren with us. we would like some advice from all of you travellers out there where to base ourselves. we have to go late july early august because of having to go in school holidays. we have been to florida before but think it may be a bit too steamy for the little kids at that time. we are looking for somewhere the weather is good, where there will be stuff for the grandchildren to do, their ages are 6,7,9,14, and 15 so a bit of a tall order to please them all. of course florida has it all but we would like to try somewhere different. any ideas people

Having said that, there are lots of things that our kids really like about the mid-Tennessee area. We like to stay in Murfreesboro, a relatively small community about 20 miles south of Nashville. One is still close to all the Nashville activities without beating your head against the traffic. Interstate Highway 24 runs all the way to Chatanooga (and beyond).
There are the inveterate amusement parks that all kids love, with some unusally outstanding rides. Believe it or not, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge is an excellent theme park (seen here: http://themeparks.about.com/od/findusthemepark s/p/Dollywood.htm ). There several others, but don't overlook the scenic areas of the Great Smoky Mountains.in the eastern area of the state. They are truly grand (seen here : http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Maps+of+Te nnessee&um=1&ie=UTF-8&split=0&gl=us&ei=heL-SYj HB4noyAXB4uSjBA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=titl e&resnum=1 ). Great food and friendly people make Tennessee one of our favorite States. (Although not for everyone's tastes, Tennessee has almost as many Civil War battle sites as any other southern State except for Virginia) Welcome to the U.S.!

Head on over to San Diego, California. Weather mild, wonderful beaches, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, Lego Land, Sea World and a short 1 1/2 drive up to Disneyland. Lots of things to see and do in and around the area. Weather is usually in the mid 70's to lower 80's that time of year. Low humidity usually and little rain if any at all. A little pricey for hotels but there is something for all ages, even adults.
