Can I buy something to seal the gaps in my floorboards before painting them?

You cna buy Laminate Floor Sealant from Screwfix. I used it on large gaps in floorboards and it was fairly easy to use. It can't be sanded but if you apply it carefully, it should have a smooth finish just below the level of your floorboards. It's a fairly garish yellowish colour, but it can be painted or stained.
