You really need to have seen the grid to answer this 'cos the answers are related in many cases and are only part of the cryptic solution.

Does anyone out there understand 29 across? The answer should be ?O?T? The clue is"Acts agreesively, judge does, about new edition of book (9) The four letters missing from the answer are some kind of knife.

Many thanks if you kinow it.

(JACK)BOOTS

Meaning acts aggressively, from J = judge ACTS = does around an anagram of BOOK.

JACK to be left out

I thought this was great fun to do - Enigmatist has gone up in my estimation! 11a was a gem, I thought.
Have found this hard going. Am on last three.
Is 27ac overt wear caps? If so is this a quotation or a saying? and 3dn and 28 dn rock and roll? if so what is central character? This will still leave me with 25dn but I can struggle with that a little longer.

Thanks in advance for any inputs.

Okay Ramilahs
Rock 'n' roll is right - the central character being the "n" out of one! 27 ac is "over the cracks" the full answer being "paper over the cracks" anagram of PERK PROCREATES with CHAV, and the bit you don't enter is PAPER (knife).

If you want any help with the other one, let me know!

Good luck.

TERRY
Many thanks Terry -- two things threw me -- the markings on the grid and the anagram I picked up "with" instead of "perk". Before I tackle 25dn, could you pls confirm if 24dn is The Who and 25 ac is Blue(fish). I think something is not right with my 25ac as it gives B?C?M? for 25dn which is still beyond me. Thanks again Terry
Question Author
I thought at first it was The Who, but "articles put together" leads me to suspect it was the band "The The" which did exist but were much less known. Take your pick.

25 dn: Second class gives B. compiler after green gives ME after ECO (green). giving BECOME (suit).

Good luck. TERRY
Many thanks Terry

It is The The. I could not find it in Google search but found it in Yahoo search and it is even listed in Wikepedia. Why it did not come up in Google I do not know.

I would have never guessed Become -- ECO = green I would never have guessed. But my fault was not thinking of me for compiler.

Once again many thanks Terry
I've finished this apart from 11 across which completely throws me - I can see justification for four letters but not for an answer to the clue or for a knife.
Are you an Allo Allo fan? Have you watched the TV series? Helga is one of the characters which leads you to another character which is the solution. I am sure you will stumble on it so donot want to spoil your fun by saying any more

I think the answer to 11 ac is one of the most fiendish I have come across in years of solving.

When you get it you'll groan. If further stuck I'm sure one of us will put you out of your misery!!!

Thanks for your help. I've got it now, but I would never have got without assistance as I could never stand that programme. Clever clue.

Funny how I knew the obscure rock band, but not the common TV character.
Cant think what 13 across is about. I have F-ELD---HT(-)
(-----) Is there a film title that would fit. Presumably F-ELD could be FIELD as in FIELD KNIFE
Just tumbled to the answer to 13 Forgot to think of the front instead of the back
Question Author
Hi Ivanhoe

13 ac is the one answer which has completely bewildered me.

Can you explain how you arrived at the correct answer?

Ta. TERRY DALY
Hi Terry
You put me on the right track with over the cracks. Think of the front and you can make an eleven lettered name .Remember the film clue and the knife could be in front like in paper over the cracks. Hope you can work it out. it's more fun if you get it yourself
Question Author
Hi Ivanhoe.

Got it now. Eventually went through it like buttter!

It was an absolutely great crossword. Had more fun with it than I have with others for a long time.

Keep your head down - we might get another similar!
