Oranges: Go-cart.
2 Answers
I read a children's book in the 1970's. It seemed to be written by an old man reminiscing. Two tales I remember are: The boy steals 12 oranges and is caught by the police. He is put in a cell and whilst there, he eats all the oranges- peel, pips and all, so there is no evidence left.
the other tale is the boy racing in a go-cart. Another boy in the race gets hit by a truck at the bottom of the hill and dies.
Does anybody know this book?

I believe you're thinking of The Goalkeeper's Revenge and other stories by Bill Naughton.
My teacher read them to us in the 60s and I had a copy of the book for a long time. My favourite story is the very sad tale of the boy who raced his soapbox cart down a hill and was killed by a tram.
Lovely stories, almost perennial and, as you'll see from the above link, still available.
