Is this a genuine mistake or a blatant case of fraud that should be investigated by the police, even if he has now paid the money back?

As to a "mistake" as a previous poster said if my mortgage had ended I'd know about it, obviously more has more money than he knows what to do with (creamed from more false claims no doubt). The Games up Elliot and your fellow collegues with their snouts in the trough.

EU money is spent over such a range of activities that the auditors cannot guarantee that the exact amounts were always spent correctly.
The US federal budget has not had a positive statement of assurance for about eight years. The UK's Department for Work and Pensions (formerly the DSS) has not had its equivalent statement for the last 15 years - and its budget is larger than that of the whole EU!

Jake's spot on about the accountability. I mean there's not an accountant in the EU that'lll sign off the accounts for the last 14 years. FFS it's so bent Stephen kin Hawking couldn't work it out. Large Hardon Collider? Childs play! (and jake before you divert opinion I know the LHC is in Switzereland and not the EU)
